The total area of the region is 322,131ha including 215,110ha of forests and 38,484ha of agricultural lands. Some 1,836ha of arable lands were desolated in the aftermath of the Chernobyl accident. As for minerals, the Lelchitsy land is rich in peat, sand and clay. There is a unique deposit of building stone in the region which surfaces in the village of Glushkovichi.

Today the Lelchitsy region is made up from the Lelchitsy township and 73 other settlements which are clustered in 14 village councils.

As of January 1, 2005 the region is home for 28,3 thousand people including 19,4 thousand live in the rural areas and 8,9 thousand people – in the Lelchitsy township. (As of January 1, 1986 – 34,2 thousand people including 26,6 thousand in the rural areas and 7,6 thousand in the Lelchitsy township). After the Chernobyl catastrophe a part of the territory became an exclusion zone. Some 650 people were resettled from this territory in between 1986-1999. The village of Voronovo was entirely resettled and partially were resettled such settlements as the villages of Usiv, Grebeni, Kalinino, Lokhnitsa and Mekhach.

Over the recent 19 years a lot has been done to revive the territories contaminated in the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster. A maternity hospital, a health center and a canteen were constructed in the Lelchitsy township, as well as three district hospitals, four schools, new trading outlets. There has been an intense construction of dwelling in the private sector. The local stadium and a sport school for children were reconstructed.
